Both the city and the valley were named after the rancher and Californio Robert Livermore, whose rancho once extended over much of the area that is now the city of Livermore. Apart from Wente, whose total land area extends over almost 3,000 acres (including a Greg Norman-designed golf course), the valley is home to more than 40 wineries. There are now more than 5,000 acres of vineyards in Livermore.
